Milan Rubio

A great close-up of the great Gainsbourg from Madrid-based illustrator (Madrid must be teeming with incredible illustrators!) Milan Rubio. Milan has a blog, a Flickr site and another blog where he sketches classic movies. What a brilliant idea!

Gary Willis

Here's Bardot,Birkin and Gainsbourg courtesy of Gary Willis. Gary is a graphic designer with a "passion for Girls Who Sing in French". He's also a regular visitor to the Filles Sourires website (which we all should be).

Mina Estevez

Here's Jane & Serge from Mina Estevez. Mina featured the Draw Serge blog on the excellent Hint Blog last week which resulted in hundreds of new visitors. Thanks, Mina!

Rue de Verneuil

Last week, whilst in Paris, I managed to visit Rue de Verneuil, Serge's Paris home. A very quiet sedate street filled with antique shops until you reach the end where you're confronted with a wall of graffiti dedicated (apart from the odd random tag) to Monsieur Gainsbourg. It's very easy to imagine Serge wandering back up that street, Gitane in hand, after a night out. Just behind that wall is the statue "L'Homme A Tete De Chou" as featured on the cover of the album of the same name.

I recognise the Johann Sfar drawing (top left) but if anyone can credit any of the other pieces I'd be most grateful.

Charnier Corey

Charnier Corey is a Brooklyn based painter, sculptor and photographer. His Serge pic was one of a series of pen and paper portraits produced in 2006. To see more of his work (and portraits of other legends such as Basquiat, John Coltrane and Marvin Gaye) visit his website and MySpace page.

Toru Fukuda

Oh, imagine how excited I was when this arrived in my inbox. Toru Fukuda is one of my favourite contemporary illustrators. In my imagination this is the title page of an animated Serge Gainsbourg cartoon from the late 60s/early 70s a la Mr Rossi. If only! Toru is a Tokyo based illustrator (oh, how I'd love to put that in my bio!) with a website full of cartoony gold and a Flickr site to match. Domo arigato gozaimasu, Fukuda-san!

Tom Crowley

A lovely brush and ink (I assume!) Serge from illustrator Tom Crowley. Tom has a blog which includes the strangely touching Henry the Sad Martian. Tom admits that his blog is "a bit dormant", looking at the quality of his work I hope it doesn't stay that way.

Carol Bertolotti

Here's Carol Bertolotti's painting of Serge titled "Curious Serge" (because it's "Serge looking a bit like Curious George"). Carol is a painter, vinyl collector and a collector of Arnold Stang memorabilia. Carol has also exhibited work in Italy and America.

Incidentally, I'm currently updating this blog from Saint Germain, Paris. Just a stone's throw from Serge's house! How appropriate.

Joe List

Here's Serge as seen through the eyes of Joe List. Joe is an illustrator, animator, character designer, contributor (and co-creator along with Dan Berry) to the excellent "I Dream of a World Without You" blog and the genius mastermind behind the inspired "Annotated Weekender".

Óscar T. Pérez

Here's a fantastic Serge & Jane from Óscar T. Pérez. It's a scene from the video for "Melody" from Serge's masterpiece "Histoire de Melody Nelson" (click here to see the clip). Óscar is a Madrid-based illustrator (Madrid must be full of fantastic artists!) and his work can be seen here and here.

Abigail Whitehouse

Here's a lovely blue, impasto, painty Serge from Abigail Whitehouse. Abigail is an artist and illustrator based in Chester. Along with Desdemona McCannon, Abigail curates the excellent Doodlezine which is now looking towards it's third issue (I'm in the first two!).

Mathieu Lavoie

Joanna Fallon

Joanna is a Bristol based illustrator. She uses a combination digital and hand-drawn techniques to produce her beautiful, distinctive artwork. Here's her Serge. Check out that saucy smoke! Tim Fish

First France Gall! Courtesy of Boston-based comic artist and writer, Tim Fish. His rendition is based on Serge and France Gall's Eurovision '65 performance. Here's Tim's website and blog for more great examples of his work.

Dan Berry

Dan Berry's Serge pic is a combination of brush pen, italic nib fountain pen and grey markers on card. No Photoshop or computer trickery involved. Very nice indeed. Dan is a lecturer at Glyndwr University where he teaches on the Illustration for Graphic Novels course. He's also responsible for setting up and contributing to the hilarious "I Dream Of A World Without You" blog.

David Galletly.

David Galletly is an artist/illustrator based in Scotland. Here's his Serge (with his trusty Gitane!). Lovely smoke, David! Here's his blog and Facebook group.

Nelson Evergreen

Nelson Evergreen (AKA Neil Evans) is yet another old art college pal and ex-housemate (I've seen Neil eat a chicken curry from a vase - FACT). Here's his brilliant rendition of Serge et Jane. Melody, Nelson? Nelson has a blog, a website and yet another blog. Greedy sod! Have a look for more examples of his ludicrously good artwork.

Jose Luis Garcia Lechner

Another fantastic contribution from Amsterdam (or "Gainsterdam", if you will - thanks Jose!). Jose Lucia Garcia Lechner is a freelance illustrator based in Amsterdam. Jose has drawn a lot of Serge over the years (including this great cover to "Gentils Garçons"), here's just three examples to whet your appetite. I'll do a second post of Jose's work later on. It is possible to have too much of a good thing!

Hanco Kolk

Real treat today. Not one but THREE pics from renowned Dutch comic artist, Hanco Kolk. These images will eventually grace the cover of "Gainsnord", a compilation of Serge covers by Dutch and Belgian artists (compiled by Guuzbourg who also runs the fantastic Filles Sourires blog). Hanko, along with Peter de Wit, is the creator of "Gilles de Gues" and the daily newspaper strip "S1ngle". Visit Hanco's website for more beautiful brush work and way more stuff than I can mention here.

Ben Raffe

Not technically a "drawn" Serge more a "collage" Serge but, y'know, this is a broad church so here's Monsieur Gainsbourg seen through the eyes of Ben Raffe. Ben runs Chester's premier kawaii boutique Tokyo Jazz Panda. Pop in if you're ever in Chester and say "Konichiwa!" and maybe even buy yourself a Kaiju or Professor Skeffington (a bit of shameless self plugging there but, c'mon, everyone's got to make a living!).

Jerzovskaja

Jerzovskaja is an illustrator and designer based in Switzerland. He submitted 5, yes FIVE, versions of this incredible Serge portrait before he eventually arrived at one he was happy with. He'd entered a Gainsbourg trance to such a degree that at some points he was referring to me as "Serge"! Thankfully, he's documented the entire process on his blog.

Jerzovskaja is also responsible for curating (along with Beach) the amazing Football Heroes books (which I have been lucky enough to contribute to). They're beautiful, lavishly illustrated tomes which are a joy to look through even if you're not interested in football.

Radimus

Radimus is a London-based motion designer and animator who also produces great vector caricatures. Here's his Serge. More caricatures can be seen on his blog (where he's also drawn France Gall!) and Flickr page.
